100/100When does summer end?Continue on AniListWhen does summer end?
Is it when the leaves change in color? When the night breeze does not cool but chill? When our environment does not appear vibrant and full of joy anymore? Surely summer marks a high point and the end of it invokes a deep longing. A longing that is well depicted in this work through the inner workings of our protagonist. A person who we follow through ups and downs within their life. A person who we as readers get to observe, sometimes in complete silence, going about their life and figuring things out. This is that type of work.
What did I like about it?
For me it was the art that hooked me, the atmosphere that kept me engaged and the story that kept me wondering. I was oftentimes contemplating whether the mangaka shouldn't have used more pronounced lines and spelled out the inner workings of the characters more clearly but alas it all played into the somewhat ephemeral and fleeting feeling of experiencing summer. When summer starts, we plan and enjoy and live in the here and now. Yet suddenly, the cold, and as soon as summer began, we find ourselves thrown back into a new reality.
What did I not like about it?
The thrownness of the whole work. Things happen and we observe, we don't fully understand and we wait. There were moments were I was not sure whether the things depicted were actually taking place or not. And I did somewhat enjoy the ambiguity of it in hindsight. Some character traits were insufferable to me. I thought: "Move on, little ones! Life is out there to be lived! Go on, lost ones! There will be light at the end of the tunnel, but you need to keep going!". This was probably the biggest hardship I experienced while reading it. Some others might also find that the drawings are too flimsy, too thin. I however enjoyed this as it really spoke to my own memories of summers long gone; once colorful, now only washed out, bleached, too white, as if someone turned the ISO all the way up on my camera. A lingering sense of nostalgia.
Should you read it?
If any of my descriptions appealed to you and made you remember (at least bittersweet) memories, then you will probably enjoy this work. It's not very long so there isn't much to lose. The first chapter gives a good insight into the art and the atmosphere but you will have to read at least 3-5 chapters to get a good grasp on the characters and the story. Reading this manga is an experience I would not want to miss.If this work is about summer, what about the people who prefer winter?
There is a somber and quiet feeling about this work, which, paired with the overly white pages, does remind me of winter at times. Just as we cannot escape the return, as well as the passing, of summer, so can we not escape the coming and going of people in our lives. How our characters deal with it is for you to find out.
