  Brilliance in a small package

  Short but sweet. A fitting description for this beautifully constructed gem, _La Maison en Petits Cubes_ presents a simple story with a truly resonating effect. An elderly man lives a solitary life in his single room house, completely surrounded by water. As the water level rises, he is repeatedly forced to build additional layers. One day, he accidentally drops his favourite smoking pipe. Diving into the depths of the lower levels of his home, he relives memories of bygone days, ultimately re-emerging with these memories and as a changed man. _La Maison en Petits Cubes_ is only twelve minutes long, yet in that short span of time it manages to create a heartwarming and emotionally stimulating story. We truly sympathise for the man, secluded and labouring away with only a collection of family photos on the wall to keep him company. But as he dives down further and further, the scenes from his past, which are heartfelt by themselves, form a narrative of his life. Bittersweet and filled with emotions, they seem to reinvigorate the man, breathing the life back into him. And that is the simple yet elegantly presented message of the story. Cherish these memories, take them for what they are. You may never be able to relive them but, as long as you have them with you, that is reason enough to keep on going. In the early stages of the film we see the man fishing through a trap door in the floor of his level. Perhaps he is searching for these memories, for these moments to reignite his life. We only learn the bare minimums of the world the man lives in and the details of his life, but that is all we need to know. Anything beyond what is presented would only weigh the film down and unnecessarily complicate things. Visually, the film is seemingly a blend of watercolour and sketches. This is a unique and simple style that complements the story by invoking a more personal, heartfelt or homely feel. Life is presented as a painting, as art. And although this is arguably reductive in a sense, it succeeds in capturing the sheer emotion and beauty that is the old man's life. The film makes great use of the orange/blue colour palette too, and in quite a unique fashion. The soundtrack is equally simple yet appropriate, consummating the mood and tone of the story beautifully. There is no dialogue and none is needed. Although the story itself is unique, the central theme and concept has definitely been addressed in a multitude of other works, which, given its simplicity, is only to be expected. This by no mean detracts from the film, and in the end it does just what it intended to do: present a simple yet heartwarming tale. Basic but graceful in design, _La Maison en Petits Cubes_ really tugs on the heartstrings resulting in a genuinely beautiful product. Having won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2009, the film really goes to show how complex plots and characters are not needed to construct an uplifting piece, and that sometimes the most simple of things can have the most profound effects. At twelve minutes long, there is no excuse not to watch this. You won't be disappointed.

  A short little movie about the past.

  Tsumiki no Ie is a short little movie about an old man and his journey through his memories.

  [PREMISE OF THE MOVIE:]()
  At the start of the movie the old man is seen fishing in the house after looking at the pictures of his family.
  The fishing through his house could be interpreted as him trying to fish out his memories to the new surface. Why am I saying new surface, well you see due to the rising sea water he had to build additional cubes to stay above the water level, many memories got trapped in the cubes.
  After an attempt of moving his old stuff he drops his favourite pipe down the trapdoor.

  The old man rents a scuba gear and proceeds down the memory lane, quite literally.
  Each level he goes down he remembers a new memory of him and his wife, from the moments they met each other to their very last days.
  Each time he enters a new room the colours are a melancholic blue and shift into a cheerful yellow when he remembers the good ol' days.

  The animation is not bad, it feels like it could've been hand made, its smooth and yet has that choppy feeling to it.
  All of the colours in the movie blend together into one, complementing each other along the way. It makes for an interesting aesthetic to the movie.

  There is no dialouge in the movie apart from the OST and some sound effects.
  The OST is really good. During the memory scenes the songs move to a melancholic vibe. Really slow and heavy hitting to emphasise the sheer sadness contained in these memories.

  

  
  

  [OVERALL OPINION:]()
  The movie is not bad, its 12 minutes long and its simple and yet sweet. The movie is not bad in anyway shape or form.
  The old man remembers his past fun memories which makes him really sad and upset and yet he pushes onwards to a new day (like we can see at the end of the movie). A story about the past and moving on. Quite good.

  Yes my score is quite low for the movie but that shouldn't really discourage anyone from watching this little movie.

  Recuerdos hundidos en el océano de nuestra memoria

  Sinopsis

  En una ciudad prácticamente inundada por la acción del mar, un anciano testarudo vive solo. Debido a la constante subida del nivel del mar, éste se ve obligado a levantar un nuevo piso cada cierto tiempo. Cuando se dirige a recoger sus pertenencias para instalarse en la planta superior, su preciada pipa cae al agua y decide buscarla. Al intentar recuperarla, se da cuenta de que antiguos recuerdos vienen a su mente y, poco a poco, se embarca en un viaje introspectivo que toca parte de sus vivencias más importantes.

  Temas y ejecución

  Generalmente los cortometrajes no son muy apreciados por los otakus. Solo hay que mirar las calificaciones que reciben o la cantidad de personas que se ha molestado en ver unos cuantos. ¡Y eso que muchísimos duran menos de diez minutos! Indignado me hallo. Más allá de esta indignación, no sabéis cuanto amor profeso a esta creación del animador Kunio Katou. No es un artista muy conocido la verdad porque sus trabajos han sido escasos. Su otra obra es El Diario de Tortov Riddle, una aventura surrealista de la que hablaré en otra ocasión. Si la primera tenía su encanto, esta es sin duda su mayor logro y, probablemente, hasta la fecha el mejor cortometraje que ha producido la animación japonesa. Sé que me hacen falta ver muchos cortos para decir algo de manera tan rotunda, pero hasta nueva orden lo mantendré.

  A diferencia de lo que ocurre con la animación para televisión o películas, los cortos se prestan más a probar diferentes técnicas y estilos de animación. En una primera impresión sobre el reseñado se me parecía a un cuadro al óleo. Tras leer varias opiniones, tuve más claro que presentaba un aspecto similar al de un libro de ilustraciones dibujado de forma muy cuidada. Tenía la impresión de ver páginas de un libro en movimiento. También da la sensación de que han empleado lápices de colores. La paleta de colores utiliza tonos azules, verdes y marrones que cambian cuando aparece una escena del pasado. Los personajes no tienen muchas expresiones faciales, pero consiguen transmitir un sentimiento o estado de ánimo sin esfuerzo. El sonido y las visuales funcionan juntos, haciendo los cambios oportunos en cada tramo o momento del corto. La música pertenece a Kenji Kondo que utiliza instrumentos como la guitarra y el piano. En mi opinión, hay una clara inspiración occidental. No sabría decir de quien exactamente, pero uno de sus referentes puede ser Aleksandr Petrov.

  

  Como he dicho en la sinopsis, este solitario anciano vive en un pueblo casi totalmente sumergido por el agua del océano. Apenas quedan unas pocas viviendas que no hayan sido cubiertas por el líquido transparente y, como es natural, sus habitantes han abandonado el pueblo. Solo ese señor ha decidido quedarse mientras lo único que lo acompaña es el graznido de las gaviotas, el ruido de los barcos al cruzar y el rumor del mar. Su casa, sin estar repleta de pertenencias suyas, tiene una gran cantidad de retratos de su esposa y familia. La presentación de esta estampa tan cargada de sentimiento se hace con un ritmo deliberadamente lento para calar mejor en nuestro ánimo y sin utilizar ningún tipo de diálogo o monólogo interior. En ningún momento pierde la sencillez que le caracteriza desde el principio, aún cuando use ciertas metáforas visuales. Por ejemplo, el paso del tiempo representado por el mar. Nunca utiliza intrincados símbolos para expresar sus ideas. Algunos de los temas tocados aquí son la vejez y la soledad representados en el protagonista.

  Más de lo que se piensa, el hecho de hacerse mayor significa que uno puede quedarse solo a medida que familia, amigos y conocidos abandonan este mundo. Si bien algunos no sufren de este mal que tanto daño provoca a nuestro corazón, este sí afecta a muchos ancianos cuyos hijos se han olvidado de ellos y viven en aldeas prácticamente olvidadas. Ellos siguen haciendo su día a día, pero al terminar sus tareas y tomar un descanso se encuentran que no tienen nadie con quien hablar. Para distraerse o evitar pensar en ello, encienden la televisión o se ponen a leer algo. Además hay que tener en cuenta que son personas más propensas a enfermar o, incluso, pueden morir cualquier día sin que nadie les eche de menos. De verdad se me rompe el corazón imaginar esto y espero no tener que pasar por ello. Uno siempre quiere tener, al menos, un vínculo con alguien. Alguien con quien hablar y disfrutar.

  Tras ver como vive este señor, observamos como la pérdida de su pipa se convierte en el desencadenante para realizar un viaje por el fondo del mar a través de sus recuerdos más preciados. A medida que desciende por cada unas de las plantas que componen su casa, éste va experimentado recuerdos de su pasado. Pero la diferencia está en que comienza desde sus recuerdos más cercanos hasta los más lejanos en el tiempo. Sin duda, esto es bastante inusual porque el procedimiento habitual en la mayoría de películas y series cuando deciden introducir un flashback es al revés. Pero así se siente bastante más natural y lógico de lo mostrado en esos productos. A la par también nos damos cuenta de que la casa es una metáfora de nuestra vida y cada piso que la compone es una etapa de ella. Al igual que una casa se construye con materiales y esta se hace más alta, lo mismo ocurre con nuestra vida que se alarga con el tiempo y está formada por numerosos momentos creados gracias a muchas personas y acontecimientos.

  ¿Y qué siento uno al ver el recorrido del anciano en su vida? Muchas lágrimas me he dejado viéndolo. Es difícil expresar con palabras, pero uno se da cuenta del valor de las cosas que experimenta y de esas relaciones maravillosas con amigos y familia. De verdad hay que apreciar más ciertas cosas. En fin, puedo decir que en conjunto este cortometraje consigue tocar el alma de cualquiera sin mucha dificultad. Algunos son tremendamente duros y ni siquiera algo de mal gusto o una tragedia hace mella en ellos. Pero hay casos como este en que tienes que plegarte cuando ves algo tan humano con lo que empatizar. En conclusión, La maison en petits cubes dejará pegada en ti tiempo después de verlo.
